HISTORY:

There are several theories as to how the American Bulldogs were evolved to the breed they are today. You can reasearch their background and find them throughout history in just about all centuries and countries. We may never really know exactly where they originated, but we do know why. Bulldogs were bred to work! Their name says it all. Over the years American Bulldogs were raised to take down big game such as cattle and wild boar. They had a strong, tireless drive that got the job done. Their strong, musclular structure made it possible to bring down an animal 20 times their own size.

Over the years, their popularity dwindled. The American Bulldog was considered a "low class dog" thanks to the popularity of the pure bred English Bulldog.

In America, mostly the south,  American Bulldogs were primarily use for guard dogs on planations or in prison yards and for farm work. Certain regions had differnent names for these dogs such as Old English White, Southern Bulldog, Old Country Bulldog, Swamp Bulldog, White English, and many others.

Their population was really thinning out until a few bulldog lovers crossed the countryside for the best bulldogs they could find. They bred their bulldogs with great sucess and brought back the American Bulldog that we know today.

The two men, Alan Scott and John D. Johnson, each devloped their own strain of the bulldog.

The Johnson or bully type is bred to be a thick, stocky bulldog with a strong undershot jaw. He will generally have a large, square head with a short muzzel. His chest should have a wide space between the front shoulders that is well defined with muscles. His body should look as if he were chiselled from stone. He should have the presence of great strength and power.

The Scott or standard type is a taller, lighter bulldog. They resemble a tall, white pit bull. Their muzzle is longer and  their undrshot is closer. Their front legs are underneath them, unlike the bully whose legs are thrown to the side. They have a mucsular, athletic look. They are a true premomance dog. They should give a look of strength and agility.

There have been several other blood lines and even some hybrids. Look below to see the CKC standard.
